Cleveland Indians area scout Don Lyle had a big get with the Tribe’s selection of Bradley Zimmer as their first-round selection with the 21st pick. Zimmer, a University of San Francisco outfielder, was high on Lyle’s list all season long. Local college baseball fans had an opportunity to see Zimmer up close when USF played Sacramento State on April 2 at Raley Field. Zimmer’s older brother, Kyle, a USF pitcher, was taken in the first round in 2012.
In 1993, Lyle–then with San Diego–had another big local prize when the Padres drafted Derrek Lee of El Camino High in the first round. Derrek is the son of Leon Lee, “Sacramento’s Mr. Baseball.”
